When I want a classic cocktail that’s quick, refreshing, and easy to love, I reach for a whiskey ginger. It’s made with just three simple ingredients, and there’s no need to use a fancy bottle here. This is an everyday kind of drink that lets whiskey shine without feeling heavy.

I love a whiskey ginger on days when I’m craving something cold and thirst-quenching but still want that unmistakable whiskey flavor. The ginger ale softens the edges just enough, making it a great option even for someone who doesn’t usually reach for whiskey. A squeeze of fresh lime at the end adds a bright, citrusy lift that brings everything together.

This bubbly drink comes together in minutes with whiskey, full-bodied ginger ale, and lime wedges. Canadian rye, American, or Irish whiskey all work well, and if you’re using Irish whiskey, it’s technically called an Irish buck. I’ll sometimes add a piece of candied ginger for a little extra sweet heat—it’s a small touch that makes the whole drink feel special.

Tip: While it can definitely be made to taste, 2 ounces of whiskey to 6 ounces of ginger ale is the classic ratio. Want to make a lower alcohol drink? Half the amount and use a rocks glass instead.

Ginger ale vs. ginger beer

Although they’re often grouped together, ginger ale and ginger beer are quite different, with distinct flavors and uses.

Ginger ale is a ginger-flavored, carbonated soda with no alcohol. It’s lightly sweet, gently aromatic, and mild in flavor, which makes it a classic pairing with whiskey.

Ginger beer , on the other hand, is brewed and naturally fermented. It contains a very small amount of alcohol (less than 0.5 percent, so it’s still considered non-alcoholic) and has a bolder, more complex ginger flavor with a spicy finish. Using ginger beer in a whiskey ginger creates a more robust, punchier take on the classic drink.
