A Strawberry Mojito cocktail in a glass with a straw - 1

This strawberry basil mojito is a fresh, summery twist on the classic, and it’s exactly what warm evenings call for. When strawberries are at their peak—sweet, fragrant, and impossible to resist—I turn them into a quick strawberry simple syrup that pairs beautifully with fresh mint and basil. The result is a cocktail that’s fizzy, bright, and fruity, with layers of flavor that feel both refreshing and a little unexpected.

What sets this version apart from a traditional mojito is the strawberry–basil combination. Mint still brings that familiar cooling note, but basil adds a soft, peppery edge that plays so well with ripe strawberries and a squeeze of lemon juice. Together, they create a drink that feels more complex than the original, yet still easygoing and fun to sip. Fresh strawberries are best here, but frozen and thawed ones work nicely, too.

As for the rum, white rum is my go-to. It’s light-bodied and clean, giving the drink that laid-back, kick-back-and-relax vibe mojitos are known for. You can use dark or spiced rum if that’s what you have, but it will add warmer notes and shift the flavor away from the classic profile. Either way, this strawberry basil mojito is summer in a glass.

Make a strawberry mojito pitcher

This recipe makes one mojito; for summer entertaining, you can easily turn it into a pitcher of strawberry basil mojitos.

You only need to use cups, not ounces. Muddle 1 cup of strawberry simple syrup with a handful of basil and mint leaves. Strain it into a pitcher, then stir in 1 cup of white rum, ½ cup of lemon juice, and 2 cups of soda water. You can double or triple the recipe as needed.

How to muddle the ingredients

Muddling is a great way to extract flavor from fruits and herbs to infuse them into your mojito (or any cocktail, for that matter). Typically, a muddler is used; if you don’t have one on hand, you can also use any blunt kitchen object to gently press and twist the fruits and herbs. The back of a wooden spoon works perfectly in a pinch!
