This smoky guacamole recipe is truly next-level. If you haven’t tried adding chipotle peppers in adobo sauce to your guacamole, let’s change that. The wonderful, smoky flavor they add is incredible!

This is a recipe that we’ve been making for years, and we still love it. It’s a great dish to take to a party, serve with a Mexican-inspired feast, or make for a quick lunch.

Why you’ll love this smoky guacamole with chipotle peppers

  • Smoky chipotle peppers. Once you try this recipe, you’ll wonder why you’ve never added them to your guacamole before.
  • Ground cumin. This not-so-common guacamole ingredient totally kicks it up a notch.
  • You’ll get all the compliments on your amazing guacamole skills when you bring this to a party.
  • With a big bowl in front of you, life will be all about eating amazing dip.
  • It is just as delicious served with crunchy raw veggies as it is with corn chips. (Ok ok, almost as delicious.)

Ingredients in smoky guacamole

  • Avocados – we use three large, ripe avocados.
  • Red onion – finely minced so that it blends well into the dip.
  • Chipotle peppers – These come in a can packed with a deliciously smoky sauce called adobo sauce.
  • Ground cumin – this spice adds a wonderful flavor to the guacamole that really compliments the smoky adobo sauce.
  • Garlic – just a little and finely minced so that it blends into the sauce.
  • Lime juice – fresh is always best!
  • Salt – We like to use sea salt or kosher as the flavor is more mild than table salt. If you only have table salt, add half the amount and taste from there.
  • Liquid smoke – this is an optional ingredient and really amps up the smoky flavor. Look for it around the BBQ sauce section in your grocery store or online .

What are chipotle peppers in adobo sauce?

Those funny little things you see up there are what you’ll find when you open a can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. You’ll find small cans of them in the Mexican section of most grocery stores. You can also buy them online .

The chipotle peppers come packed in smoky adobo sauce. To make this recipe, you’ll want to take out one of the peppers and chop it into very small pieces. Don’t worry about removing the seeds. Once the pepper is chopped, put it into a 1-tablespoon measuring spoon, then fill it to the top with adobo sauce. This is enough to make mildly smoky, slightly spicy guacamole.

If you want more smoky flavor, simply add more chopped chipotle peppers and adobo sauce.

What to dip in guacamole

While tortilla chips are classic, they’re not the only thing worth dipping. Crackers and pretzels are two other crispy options.

Crunchy veggies are great for dipping, too. Our favorite veggies to dip in guacamole are cucumber slices, red pepper strips, carrot coins or sticks, and radishes. Or try topping our guacamole burger with this smoky guacamole!

And of course, this smoky guacamole is delicious on top of tacos. Try it on these tacos:
