We’re putting a Caribbean twist on a classic with this refreshing rum mule! It’s light, crisp, and everything I love about a Moscow mule, but with the bold taste of spiced rum. It’s as enjoyable on a patio as it is in front of a fireplace, and it’s easy to mix up in under 5 minutes!

If you love a classic Moscow mule, this rum-forward version, also called a dark and stormy cocktail, is an easy upgrade I make all the time. Swapping vodka for rum gives the drink a little more personality, with subtle caramel notes and warm spice that play beautifully with the sharp lime and fiery ginger beer. It’s light, crisp, and incredibly easy to drink—exactly what I want in a go-to cocktail.

I keep this one intentionally simple: rum, fresh lime juice, and ginger beer poured straight over ice, no shaking or fancy tools required. The ginger beer brings enough sweetness and bite that there’s no need for added sugar, and a squeeze of fresh lime keeps everything bright and balanced. I reach for dark or spiced rum most often because it adds depth without overpowering the drink.

You can serve it in a rocks glass or a copper mug for that classic mule feel. The mug isn’t just for looks—it keeps the drink colder and really lifts the aroma as you sip. Finished with lime slices, a few pieces of fresh ginger, and a sprig of mint, this rum mule is refreshing, unfussy, and always a crowd-pleaser.

What’s the best type of rum to use?

I love the flavor of spiced rum, so that’s what I use for this recipe. You can certainly use different types of rum, like white or dark rum; it will just yield a slightly different-tasting drink.

Can I use ginger ale instead of ginger beer?

Yes, you can. Ginger ale is less spicy and sweeter, but it will still make a great cocktail.
