This Mexican michelada is easy to make, and goes down easy, too! It’s made with beer, clamato, fresh lime juice, hot sauce, and seasonings, then served in a glass with a spicy rim. It’s entirely customizable, so add more or less of any ingredient to make this drink your own.

two michelada cocktails on a table - 1

If you travel through Mexico, you’ll often see people sipping micheladas by the pool or on sunny restaurant patios. At first glance, it might look like a Caesar or Bloody Mary, but this classic Mexican cocktail swaps vodka for beer, making it lighter, more refreshing, and perfect for warm weather.

There’s nothing fancy about a traditional michelada, which is exactly why I love it. It’s quick to make, easy to customize, and uses simple ingredients you may already have on hand. In my version, I start with a light Mexican beer and build flavor with Clamato, freshly squeezed lime juice, a few shakes of hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. The result is tangy, savory, a little spicy, and incredibly refreshing.

To finish, I like to rim the glass with a lime wedge and Tajín for a salty, citrusy kick, then fill the glass with ice before adding the mix-ins and topping with beer. It’s an easy, satisfying way to dress up a beer, whether you’re cooling off on a hot day or just craving something bold and refreshing.

Two important questions

What’s the best beer for a Michelada? I’ve tried making micheladas with Corona, Sol, Tecate, and Modelo, and they’ve all tasted great. Any lighter Mexican beer or Mexican lager will do!

What’s the best hot sauce for a Michelada? Some common Mexican hot sauces are Cholula, Valentina, and Tapatìo. You could even use Tabasco sauce in a pinch!
