This turmeric tea is my winter go-to. Whenever someone in my family feels a little run-down, this is the first thing I make. It’s bold, warming, and full of flavor, with a beautiful golden color and a lovely savory, almost curry-like depth that makes it especially comforting.

I like to sip it in the morning as a gentle way to start the day, but it’s just as nice in the afternoon or evening when I need something cozy. If I’m making it before bed (or for my daughter), I always use decaffeinated green tea so it’s soothing without being stimulating.

Once you make it a few times, it quickly becomes part of your winter routine. It’s simple, deeply warming, and genuinely enjoyable to drink—one of those small daily rituals that feels grounding and comforting during the colder months.

Everything you need to know about turmeric

You can find turmeric in the produce section of most grocery stores, usually by the ginger. Like ginger, it’s a root; they appear very similar and can be used in the same way.

If it’s organic, you don’t need to peel it. Grate it with a microplane and use it in smoothies and curries. Slice it thin and boil it in water to make tea. If you can’t find fresh turmeric, you can substitute ground turmeric; however, it will have a slightly gritty texture in this tea.

Did you know you can freeze fresh turmeric? I put the whole turmeric root in a freezer bag and then grate it as needed from frozen. It lasts for ages this way!
