Korean Pizza sliced on a serving plate - 1

I love having fun and getting creative in the kitchen. I think there are some recipes that allow you to break tradition or get creative. So, one night when I’m craving pizza but my husband had a hankering for Korean food, the solution was simple (and delicious).

This Korean pizza brings everything you love about a regular pizza – the crispy yet chewy crust, with savory and smoky toppings under bubbling cheese. Then, it adds delicious Korean flavors, such as gochujang and kimchi. The sweet, smoky, spicy combo melds together to make an unforgettable pizza – one that you’ll keep thinking about!

Korean pizza ingredients

Pizza is one of those dishes that allows for creativity! Rather than the traditional Italian ingredients, get bold with these Korean-inspired fixings:

  • Korean pulled pork : Make a big batch in your slow cooker by combining pork and gochujang.
  • Gochujang: Use this in the pulled pork, and for the pizza sauce! Find gochujang paste in Asian supermarkets, in the international food section of your local supermarket, or find gochujang online.
  • Pizza dough: Keep it simple and get store-bought, or make your own pizza dough .
  • Kimchi dipping sauce: Combine kimchi with real mayonnaise.
  • Gochujang pizza sauce: Tomato paste and rice vinegar combine with your gochujang.
  • Other ingredients: Chopped pineapple, pizza mozzarella, red onions, and cilantro.

How to make Korean pizza

After letting the slow cooker do the hard work for you, mix up some kimchi mayo, stir the pizza sauce, and then assemble everything together. It’s as easy as it is fun! This is how it’s done:

  1. Make Korean pulled pork: Put your pork and gochujang in a slow cooker, then walk away.
  2. Make kimchi mayo: Blend kimchi and mayo until mostly smooth.
  3. Make gochujang pizza sauce: Combine the ingredients in a small bowl – easy!
  4. Assemble: Turn your oven on with the pizza stone inside if you use one. Form a circular base with your dough. Then, it’s time to load it up. Start with the pizza sauce, then lay down the pulled pork. Add pineapple, mozzarella, and red onions. Bake until it’s bubbling and the crust is golden brown. When you remove it from the oven, top it with cilantro and a drizzle of the kimchi mayo sauce.

Korean pizza variations

You can always mix things up to suit your tastes or use up what’s in the fridge. Here are some easy Korean pizza variations:

  • Protein swap: If you don’t have pulled pork, you can swap it out for another protein. Bulgogi is another popular Korean protein option. Or, keep it simple and cook some chicken tossed in gochujang.
  • More kimchi: This recipe uses kimchi mayo, but if you’re a big fan of kimchi, you can add some directly to the pizza for an extra tangy flavor.
  • Extra toppings: Sauté some mushrooms in soy sauce, or add sliced bell peppers to amp up the veggies.
  • Spice level: Gochujang has some spicy notes, but it’s more complex, with sweetness and smokiness as well. Use more or less, depending on your tastes.
  • Garnishes: Sprinkle some sesame seeds over the pizza along with the cilantro.

So many things! This delicious protein can be served over rice with a side of Asian vegetables to become its own delicious dinner. You can make Korean burritos or some Korean-inspired tacos. You can also top off soy ginger noodles with some pulled pork!

What is gochujang?

Gochujang is a Korean staple! Its name originates from two Korean words: “gochu,” meaning chili or hot pepper, and “jang,” meaning paste or sauce. This fermented chili paste boasts a unique and intricate flavor profile, offering spiciness, a hint of sweetness, and a complete umami experience—reminiscent of miso but with a spicy kick. Made from red chili peppers, it delivers a moderate heat level, complemented by a sweetness often derived from rice syrup. The fermentation process results in deep umami richness, contributing to a savory and flavorful taste.
