An Irish mule is a light, bubbly, and ultra-refreshing cocktail you can enjoy any time of year. It’s made with ginger beer, lime juice, and Irish whiskey stirred with ice and served in a copper mug. It’s the perfect St. Patrick’s Day drink, and it’s ready in just 5 minutes!

An Irish mule is one of those drinks I come back to again and again—it’s light, bubbly, a little spicy, and incredibly easy to make. Inspired by the classic Moscow mule , this version swaps vodka for Irish whiskey and comes together with just three ingredients: Irish whiskey, fresh lime juice, and ginger beer. It works just as well on a hot summer day as it does during the holidays, which makes it a staple in my cocktail rotation.
I usually serve it in a copper mule mug, but a chilled highball glass works perfectly, too. I fill the glass with ice, add the whiskey and lime juice, then top it off with ginger beer and give it a gentle stir. A few slices of fresh ginger and lime go in for garnish, and if I have mint on hand, I’ll add a sprig for good measure.
It’s not a traditional Irish drink, but it’s a refreshing change of pace from the usual Guinness and Irish coffee lineup around St. Patrick’s Day. Crisp, balanced, and endlessly drinkable, this Irish mule is a simple, crowd-pleasing cocktail that earns its spot in any home bar.

Can I use ginger ale instead?
Yes! Ginger beer is traditional for an Irish mule and will give the drink a spicier ginger taste, but ginger ale works well, too.
What’s the best whiskey to use?
Save your expensive stuff because any Irish whiskey will do the trick for this drink. We use Jameson, but Bushmills is another good (less expensive) option.
Why use a copper mug?
A copper mug is perfect for a refreshing drink like an Irish mule because the copper takes on the mule’s cold temperature when ingredients are added. It’s functional, keeping the mule cold while enhancing the naturally refreshing nature of the drink.
Do you have other mule recipes?
Yes! You can try a gin mule , bourbon mule , or a rum mule .
