I’ve been making these baked apple chips for years. They are an easy-to-make, delicious snack made from thinly sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon and baked at a low temperature until crisp.

I’ve been making these crispy apple chips for years, and seriously—they’re so good it almost feels like they should be bad for you. But they’re not. They’re made with nothing more than apples tossed with a little lemon juice and cinnamon, and that’s it. I love when something tastes amazing, is easy to make, and feels like a smart snack choice. It honestly makes me want to do a very enthusiastic 1990s-style fist pump and yell, “SCORE!”

We eat these apple chips in all sorts of ways around here. They’re perfect as an after-school snack, just as good for munching while watching Netflix (sorry, popcorn), and sturdy enough to scoop up something creamy like thick vanilla yogurt. I also love sprinkling them over granola for extra crunch and sweetness. Really, they’re one of those snacks that work anytime, anywhere—which is exactly why they never last long.

What kind of apples should I use?

Crisp apples work the best. Ambrosia apples, Honeycrisp, Fuji, Pink Lady, and Gala apples are my favorites.

All of these varieties are on the sweeter side, so you’ll end up with sweeter apple chips.

They’re also my favorite apples for snacking on, so I almost always have some around the house. Are you the same?

Ingredients

  • ▢ 4 apples
  • ▢ 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ▢ ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 225 degrees. Line your baking sheets with parchment paper. Cut the apples crosswise into thin rounds about ⅛ inch thick. Don’t worry about removing the seeds; they’ll shrivel up and fall out as they cook. 4 apples
  • Toss the apple slices in the lemon juice and sprinkle the cinnamon over top and toss to coat. Lay the apples in a single layer on the baking sheets. It is ok if they are very close together. 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Bake for 2 hours, rotating the baking sheets halfway through. (Move the baking sheet on the top rack to the bottom and the bottom one to the top.)
  • Remove one apple chip from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. If it is crisp, remove all the apple chips. If not, put it back into the oven until they are crisp. Check on them every 15 mintues. The total time will vary depending on what kind of apples you use and how thin they’re sliced.
  • Let the apple chips cool completely before storing them in a resealable container.
